The Sheridan County Community Foundation (SCCF) is proud to announce the creation of the Fred L. Moss Memorial Scholarship, a new scholarship opportunity established by the Moss family in loving memory of Dr. Fred L. Moss, DVM. The scholarship has been made possible through generous memorial donations received in his honor, along with contributions from family members, and will support graduating seniors of Hoxie High School as they pursue post-secondary education.
Dr. Fred L. Moss, a lifelong Sheridan County native, passed away peacefully on December 24, 2025, at the age of 77. Born and raised in Hoxie, Fred was the son of Robert and Mildred (Conard) Moss. He graduated from Hoxie High School in 1967 with the distinction of valedictorian before pursuing his Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine at Kansas State University. He was a proud Wildcat all of his life. He went on to serve as a Captain in the United States Air Force before practicing veterinary medicine in both Steele, North Dakota, and Hoxie, Kansas, while also pursuing his passion for farming.
Fred was deeply rooted in his community and known for his strong work ethic, quiet generosity, and dedication to stewardship of the land. A self-described “High Plains person,” he valued faith, family, and service. Of all his accomplishments, Fred took the greatest pride in being a devoted husband to his wife of 56 years, Kristine, and a loving father to his three daughters Lesley, Robin, and Adriane, and grandfather to six grandchildren.
In keeping with Fred’s lifelong preference to give back quietly and without recognition, the Moss family chose to honor his legacy through the establishment of a scholarship that will invest in the next generation of Hoxie graduates.
“By creating this scholarship, the Moss family is ensuring that Fred’s values of hard work, curiosity, service, and commitment to community will continue to make an impact for years to come,” said Karl Pratt, SCCF Executive Director.
The Fred L. Moss Memorial Scholarship will award a minimum of one $500 scholarship annually to a graduating senior of USD 412 Hoxie Community Schools. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and plan to enroll full-time (at least 12 credit hours) in a four-year, two-year, or vocational program. Students are required to submit two letters of recommendation from non-family members and demonstrate academic potential, intellectual curiosity, leadership skills, a strong work ethic, and a commitment to community. The scholarship is not renewable.
Members of the Hoxie High School graduating class of 2026 have until end of day March 31, 2026, to apply for this scholarship, along with other scholarship opportunities available through the Foundation’s online scholarship portal at www.gnwkcf.org/scholarships. Once there, filter by “Sheridan County” to view all available scholarships and to apply.
