Sheridan County makes strides toward healthier living with Hoxie Walking Park Paint Project

By Kerissa Payne, Sheridan County Economic Development Program Officer

Hoxie, Kansas — September 16, 2025 — Sheridan County continues to invest in quality-of-life improvements through creative, family-friendly projects—this time adding a splash of color to the local walking park.

With support from the Sheridan County Economic Development Program, the Hoxie Walking Park obstacle course has received a vibrant upgrade from its original chalk form to a painted, more permanent design.

Becci Baker with AmberMed-Restore Therapy, Hoxie, first introduced the idea last summer, when her interns created a playful chalk obstacle course that quickly became a community favorite. This year, with the enthusiastic support of the Hoxie City Council and funding from Sheridan County Economic Development, the idea has taken on a more lasting form—using paint to make the obstacle course a permanent fixture in the park.

“This project is about more than just paint,” said Kerissa Payne, Economic Development Program Officer. “It’s about encouraging movement, making fitness more fun for all ages, and creating another reason to enjoy our outdoor spaces. We’re proud to partner with local businesses like AmberMed-Restore Therapy to make Sheridan County healthier and more vibrant—one project at a time.”

Whether families are walking for exercise, kids are jumping through painted challenges, or seniors are enjoying a stroll, the Walking Park Paint Project adds joy and accessibility to an already inviting space.

Sheridan County Economic Development efforts are carried out under the umbrella of the Sheridan County Community Foundation (SCCF). Kerissa Payne serves as the Economic Development Program Officer, working to strengthen local businesses, enhance the economy, improve quality of life, and support community progress for all who live and work in Sheridan County, Kansas.
